THE HOW’S, WHERE’S AND WHY’S OF SUNCARE
(how often, how much, pre- and post-sun care)

We’re all about living life in the sun, and that means protecting yourself from those skin-damaging UV rays. A broad spectrum sunscreen applied frequently throughout the day is a good place to start.

Let’s begin by answering your questions “Do I really need sunscreen?” And, “How long before heading into the sun do I apply it?”

Yes, you need sunscreen. Everyone. Everywhere (including your eyelids!). Every day, especially if you are going to be outside.

Regarding how far before venturing out do you apply? Well, you can’t apply sunscreen in the morning, head out to the park or beach for the whole day of fun in the sun and expect to be sunburn-free by the time you return home.

Below are some quick tips to keep your skin soft, supple and sun-kissed:

SPF 30+

Broad spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA (skin aging) and UVB (skin burning) rays. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends this type of sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30.

APPLY. PROTECT. REPEAT.

Don’t forget to reapply your sunscreen. Every 80 minutes if you’re in the water (even with water resistant formulas), or about every two hours if you stay dry.

DON’T CLOUD YOUR USE

You shouldn’t slack off just because the sun is hiding out. UVA and UVB rays have no problem slipping past clouds and haze.

TAKE A BREAK

We know, sounds crazy, but seeking a little shade is not a bad idea — especially between the hours of 10am and 2pm when the sun is at its peak.

ACCESSORIZE

As if you needed an excuse to get a floppy, wide-brim hat or that sexy beach cover-up. Protective clothing is another way to give your skin a much-needed break.

ARE YOU APPLYING YOUR SUNSCREEN PROPERLY?

Protecting skin from the sun is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Unfortunately, many people fail to take sufficient measures year-round, but especially in summer when skin exposure tends to be at its peak.

“This summer make sun care a habit,” urges Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick of the Brevard Skin and Cancer Center. “By finding a sunscreen you like that suits your lifestyle, you’ll be more apt to apply it often.”

Kirkpatrick notes that with so many choices, finding sunscreen that works best for you and knowing how to properly apply it can sometimes be confusing. Luckily, brands like Ocean Potion® are helping to make this process easier for you.

Read labels for application instructions and to determine whether a given product is right for you, and consider these quick tips for maximum skin protection:

  • Broad spectrum sunscreens contain both UVA and UVB protection. Select one with an SPF of at least 30 and apply evenly 15-to-30 minutes before going outdoors. One ounce is the right quantity to cover the whole body. Don’t forget ears, back of neck, hands, tops of feet and top of the head, if exposed. Reapply every two hours and after swimming, sweating and towel drying.
  • Going swimming? Use sunscreen engineered for water-resistance. Toss some Ocean Potion® sunscreen into your beach bag! The complete collection of products is water-resistant up to 80 minutes. Whatever sunscreen you opt for, don’t forget to reapply after exiting the water.
  • If you’re playing a sport where you need to keep hands grease-free or from melting into your eyes as you sweat, try a sunscreen that dries quickly. Ocean Potion® Dab-On Spot Stick sunscreen goes on easy and absorbs quickly, providing on-the-spot protection in a convenient portable solution. Or check out Ocean Potion® Clear Zinc formula broad spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen with zinc oxide. Great for the face, scalp, neck, nose and ears.

“Whether you’re a long-distance runner or more of a beach lover, sun protection should be part of your routine,” says Kirkpatrick.
